From 16 to 19 October Wilfried Lemke traveled to New York to meet with Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General who appointed Lemke in 2008 to the Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace. The meeting took place at the headquarters of the United Nations and aimed to discuss the past year's results of Lemke's mandate.
On Monday, 17 October 2011, Lemke attended the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a plenary meeting on "Sport for peace and development".
Every other year since 1993 prior to each edition of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, a resolution entitled "Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal" is adopted by the UN General Assembly. The resolution traditionally "urges Member States to observe, within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations, the Olympic Truce, individually and collectively," throughout the duration of the Games.
This year's resolution was presented at the General Assembly on 17 October by the United Kingdom as host of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Sebastian Coe, the double Olympic Gold medalist and chair of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games introduced the resolution on behalf of the UK.
