This year's Football for Hope Festival was held from 4 until 10 July in Johannesburg, South Africa. During the last week of the FIFA World Cup 2010, 32 football teams from all over the world joined for celebrating this special sports event, which is funded by the Youth Development through Football Programme by GTZ.
The Football for Hope Festival aims at presenting and bringing forward ideal approaches in the field of social development through football. The co-ed teams of boys and girls aged 15 until 18 represent local organisations, trying to induce social change by means of football.
From 6 until 9 July, Wilfried Lemke was in Johannesburg, supporting this special event. He visited several NGOs committed to sport for development and peace and closely connected to Football for Hope, to discuss how to develop further sport programmes and potential cooperation between them and the UN system. Among these was the project "Youth Development through Football", located in Gugulethu, a township in Johannesburg, which Wilfried Lemke visited on 6 July. On the following day he again spoke at the PASCH tournament, a youth camp organized by the Goethe Institute, which brings together youths from all over Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
