THE MANDATE

In March 2008, I was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, succeeding Adolf Ogi, who held this position until the end of the year 2007. This mandate, which was established by Kofi Annan in the year 2001, is aimed at the systematic use of sport, and to more coherently encourage the use of sport as a means to promote development and peace.

QuoteMy key responsibility is to promote sports as an instrument for development and peace both within the United Nations system and externally, and to encourage the establishment of partnerships in this area. There are many high-quality projects underway that use sport as a vehicle to promote development and peace. These must, however, function cohesively in order to be effective.

My role is threefold:

ADVOCATE   Lead and coordinate the efforts of the United Nations system to promote the understanding and support amongst UN Member States and other actors for sport as a tool to attain the Millennium Development Goals, with a special focus on sport's contribution to poverty reduction, universal education, gender equality; prevention of HIV and AIDS and other diseases, environmental sustainability as well as peace building and conflict resolution.
FACILITATOR   Encourage dialogue, collaboration and partnerships around sport for development and peace between the United Nations and Member States, international sports organizations, civil society, the private sector and the media. In my capacity as Special Adviser, I provide the entry point to the United Nations system with regard to sport for development and peace.
REPRESENTATIVE   Represent the Secretary-General and the United Nations system at important global sport events and other strategically important fora.

The combination of my extensive professional experience in both sport and politics, the support of the Link United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) in Geneva and New York, as well as your participation will ensure that sport contributes to lasting development and peace.
